On Friday 1 April, E.DSO organized the third webinar in the E.DSO “Projects in the Spotlight” series, titled “Raising the uptake of renewables by DSOs”. With around 100 participants, the event shed light on E.DSO members’ R&I projects addressing the challenges in distribution operation related to the sharp rise in renewables in new innovative ways which will help shape the energy sector of the future.
The webinar was opened by Richard Vidlička, Board Member, Chair of the E.DSO Innovation and Research Committee and Manager of Innovation and EU Projects at CEZ Distribuce. He reminded the role of E.DSO and its members in the EU projects activity and the importance to promote and support innovation considering the tremendous changes the energy system is facing.
He was followed by Giuseppe Prettico, Research Scientist on Smart Grids and Electricity Market at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, who stressed the importance of flexibility as a new key word that we started hearing in the last years and which will become an increasingly important ingredient to integrate intermittent renewable sources.
Three projects were put under the spotlight: CoordiNet, EUsysflex and Smart4RES, which, under the moderation of Marie Picut, European Affairs Policy Manager at Enedis, explained the essence of their project’s solution with regards to a scenario with high penetration of renewable energy sources.
The event was closed by Jan Osenberg, Policy Advisor on Markets & Grids at Solar Power Europe, who drew parallels to the recent paper ‘grid planning and grid connection – recommendation for a future-proof implementation of the CEP’ published by Solar Power Europe. He reminded that DSOs are at the core of the energy transition and that cooperation is the only way to an efficient transition.
