Climate and energy framework to 2030 and energy prices report – EDSO comments ahead of Energy Council
The paper highlights that the achievement of numerous EU objectives is either dependent on, or is strongly supported by, the introduction of smart solutions to our local electricity networks in Europe. Without follow-up actions to support this development, the EU risks hampering the achievement of its climate, energy and internal market objectives.
When assessing the way forward from European Commission’s new communications on a climate and energy framework to 2030 and energy prices, EDSO requests that the EU institutions consider its paper, which lays out:
- The substantial consequences for electricity network stability of the EU’s existing and future climate and energy objectives, and the resulting need for network innovation and management.
- That numerous EU objectives, such as integrating more renewables, decarbonisation, reducing energy consumption and costs for households and businesses, ensuring security of supply, stimulating job and growth creation and, of paramount importance, realising a fully integrated, functional and stable electricity market in Europe, depend on the ability of DSOs to upgrade their networks. There are currently too many barriers to this development.
- That there is a crucial and urgent need for follow-up actions such as the revision of permit procedures for grid development, incentive based regulatory reform and ensuring EU and government funding can be allocated to smart grid development at distribution level.
