‘Unpacking the Green Deal Industrial Plan: Energy Industry implications’
The Green Deal Industrial Plan (GDIP), launched on February 2023, marks a historic commitment to build a new clean energy economy, powered by European innovators, workers, and manufacturers, that will create jobs and investment in companies developing cleantech industry clusters around the EU. For electricity system operators, GDIP impacts may seem less pressing than pursuing more immediate funding opportunities for grid infrastructure.
However, the GDIP funds will accelerate the electrification in households and businesses, as well as boost the renewables. In turn, system operators will see a substantial increase in demand and change in utilisation patterns. System operators will need to prepare their infrastructure and business processes to meet the expectations of customers who are transitioning to increasingly electrified technologies.
Electricity networks are the backbone of Europe’s energy system and facilitator of the energy transition. By 2050, more than 80% of electricity will come from renewable energy sources and integrating a higher share of renewables will require a reliable, flexible and smart power system to continue to ensure a reliable energy supply. Thus, there is potential for the network operators to substantially boost their clean energy efforts, upgrade infrastructure, and improve customer satisfaction, but they must develop an integrated plan of action.
To better capture this momentum, and to assess the EU’s green industrial policy, the energy industry by E.DSO, Europacable, T&D Europe hosted a 2-hour webinar on 18 April 2023 (11:00-13:00) on the impact of Green Deal Industrial Plan and Net-Zero Industrial Act. During the webinar, the representative of DG Grow walked attendees through the various provisions of the net-zero act.
