EUSEW 2015 – Coordinated R&D for electricity grids: Overcoming barriers to a sustainable and integrated energy future
Coordinating and prioritising R&D efforts across Europe is a cost and time-efficient way to overcome the current hurdles to arriving at a future with more renewable energy sources. Working together across sectors and Member States will help us to arrive faster at technological, system and regulatory solutions that can be applied across Europe, in the process giving our economies, communities and individual citizens a chance to thrive on the roll-out of new sustainable technologies and services.
This workshop will assess the prioritisation of topics for EU R&D funding related to electricity grids, and will offer a chance to reflect on those issues put forward to the European Commission for consideration in its Horizon 2020 work programme 2016-17.
Furthermore, it will provide an example of how prioritisation activities as carried out by the European Electricity Grid Initiative (EEGI) have led to EU projects that are directly helping to build better policy. The outcomes so far of the FP7 evolvDSO project and their relevance for the European Commission’s upcoming Market design communication, where the future role of electricity distribution system operators (DSOs) in this new energy system reliant on distributed renewable energy resources (DRES) must be defined and facilitated in regulation.
