Fast-forwarding the green transition and reducing our dependency on fossil fuels is more than ever a priority for Europe. InnoGrid 2022 Project Session has once again showcased European innovative projects that are advancing the move towards a cleaner power system.
Opened by Nikos Hatziargyriou, Emeritus Professor, University of Athens, representing ETIP SNET, the session deep-dived into each project’s achievements in relation to this year’s edition’s three main themes: Value of the Grids, Value for Customers, and Value for flexibility.
George Paunescu, Policy Officer, DG Energy, European Commission, underlined the perfect timing for this year InnoGrid focus, when the acceleration mode reflects the double urgency of the energy transition due to the climate crisis and the necessity to reduce energy dependences, in particular on Russian gas. In light of the strong policy drivers for decarbonisation, financial resources, right delivery mechanisms and excellent ongoing projects, some optimisms on the transformation of the energy sector can be acknowledged.
These reflections will feed into the debates as the basis for the second session of InnoGrid 2022 where policymakers, system operators, academics, and stakeholders will discuss innovation to speed up the transformation of Europe’s power system’; highlighting achievements, challenges but also opportunities.
