Natural loss in low voltage (LV) grids has a strong impact on customers, commonly leading to outages and client equipment failures which, according to Portuguese regulations, are entitled to compensation. To address this issue, E-REDES launched the reCONNECT project, leveraging the opportunities offered by the smart meter rollout to detect neutral pre-rupture situations and define proactive actions to prevent total loss.
The reCONNECT algorithm analyses smart meter data to identify latent situations of neutral loss by analysing voltage variation events. The resulting information is integrated into E-REDES grid management system, supporting the formulation of on-field intervention requests. In its 2023 pilot phase, reCONNECT prevented 119 neutral loss cases which could have affected over 4000 customers.
