The new ECLIPSE project will facilitate energy consumption reduction and support the stability and resilience of European power grids through the implementation of an open-source reference framework

14 October 2024

On 25 and 26 September, the consortium of the new Digital Europe project ECLIPSE “Energy Consumption reduction based on Open-source Reference framework” gathered in Valencia for the project kick-off. The event set the stage for a successful collaboration, aligning efforts to achieve the ambitious goals of the project.

At the core of ECLIPSE is the objective to implement a Common European Reference Framework (CERF) for energy consumer applications. By utilising this open-source approach, ECLIPSE aims to create a collaborative environment for stakeholders to access innovative solutions that enable informed energy decisions, reduce carbon footprint, and strengthen grid stability.

Building on the first-generation blueprint developed by the InterConnect project, ECLIPSE will establish guidelines for enhancing energy consumer applications which will provide users with accessible and practical information about energy savings and associated benefits, such as reduced carbon emissions and other financial incentives. By encouraging flexible consumption behaviours—like smart charging and load shifting—the project aims to bolster the overall efficiency of the energy system while focusing on consumer engagement and voluntary participation.

Funded by the European Commission with 4.9M€, ECLIPSE is set to last for 2 years. The project will be coordinated by ETRA I+D and driven by a consortium of 23 partners. The ECLIPSE solution will be deployed and demonstrated across 16 EU countries, involving 11 grid operators, 2 energy services companies, 2 energy associations and 8 energy R&D entities.

The role of DSOs and E.DSO

The ECLIPSE consortium counts on the expertise of 6 European DSOs—including our members ČEZ Distribuce, E-REDES and i-DE—leading the piloting and deployment activities of the ECLIPSE solutions. The goals of these pilots include:

  • Aligning existing customer applications and DSO platforms with the CERF for energy consumer applications.
  • Supporting the uptake of smart charging and the provision of flexibility services through economic and non-economic incentives, streamlining communication among DSOs, customers and all involved stakeholders.
  • Integrating data from smart meters to provide relevant information to the users, enhance grid planning and support efficient grid operation.
  • Stimulating energy-efficient behaviour, and informing users of ongoing extreme weather events or grid issues.

E.DSO will lead the task dedicated to “Replication and expansion strategies” for the ECLIPSE solution which will assess the impact of different social, technical, regulatory and market conditions on the deployment of the CERF, identify barriers to replication and propose recommendations to overcome them.
