Projects of common interest (PCIs): EDSO supports smart grid candidates

The EC has completed a consultation on the eligibility of three smart grid projects for PCI status (projects of common interest). The North Atlantic Green Zone and GreenMe are already on the PCI list and reapplying to remain on the list. A new project between Slovenia and Croatia (SINCRO-GRID) involving EDSO associate member SODO was also submitted.

EDSO has supported the candidacy of all three projects in its response to the public consultation, highlighting the value of the projects for the European energy system. The EC will now assess the contributions, with a view to quickly taking a decision on the inclusion of these into the PCI list, an eligibility requirement should they wish to apply for funding from the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).

On March 5 2015, the EC launched the first of two CEF 2015 calls for proposals for projects specifically aiming to end energy isolation, eliminate energy bottlenecks and to complete the European energy market. The call is worth €100 million, with a total of €650 million for grants foreseen in 2015. The deadline for applications is April 29 2015, with a decision on the selection of proposals to be funded expected in mid-July.
